Flora
Some chaparral plants have hard, thin, needle-like leaves to reduce water loss. Other plants have hair on their leaves to collect water from the air. There are plants that are resistant to fires. That is very crucial because due to the hot weather, the biome becomes drier and more flammable.
Blue Oak

- Grows in valleys
- At higher elevations it blends with chaparral, pinyon, and juniper woodlands
- Adapt to drought and dry climates
- Winter deciduous tree
- Used as fence posts and fuel wood
Coyote Brush

- Common chaparral plant in California and Oregon
- More likely to be found in chaparral and coastal sage scrub
- A wiry and woody perennial evergreen that looks like a bush
- Depending on where it lives, this plant can change its own shape
- In protected places, like moist canyons and northwest slopes, it grows into tall, erect to mounded shrubs
- Leaves have a waxy coating that reduces the amount of moisture lost in the air due to evaporation
- Produces male and female flowers on different plants
- Provides shelter for wildlife, and also nectar for bees
- Contains fire-retardant leaves
- Tastes really bad
Common Sagebrush

- Found on dry plains of the western USA and the drier southern side of the mountains
- Perennial shrubs with straight, stiff stems
- They have a ragged, three-tooth edge
- Actual plant is silvery-grey and roundish
- Grows seeds
- Has a nice smell and a bitter taste
- Adapts to the dry environments
- Used by Native Americans as a smudge herb (herb burnt for the smell)
King Protea

- National flower of South Africa
- Originally from Cape Town of South Africa
- Now can be seen all over the world on dry environments and soil has good drainage
- On the outside, the plant has many spiky petals, giving it an appearance of a cup
- Can take in moisture through the leaves
- It is said that protea leaves can make tea
- These plants live in fragile environments
- Most of these plants now are cultivated in greenhouses or nurseries
