Fauna
The animals are nocturnal. These animals that live in the chaparral biome will be underground during the day when it’s really hot and dry. When night comes, the animals become more active and will look for food, shelter, etc.
Golden Jackal
- they can live in a wide variety of habitats:
o Sahel Desert
o Evergreens in Thailand and Myanmar
o Savannas in Africa
o Forested habitats in India and Bangladesh
- opportunistic
- can venture into human habitation and feed on garbage
- jackal population is steadily declining
- all jackals are present in all protected areas of India
- grows a thick fur coat in the winter to stay warm
Black-Tailed Jackrabbit
- Actually hares, not rabbits
- Jackrabbits were named for their ears
- There are five species of jackrabbits, found in central and western North America
- They can reach a speed of 40 mph
- With their legs, they can propel up to 10 ft
- Common among deserts, scrub lands, and other open space
- Herbivores
- Large ears to regulate body temperature
Spotted Skunk
- Omnivores
- Has the ability to shoot an odor that drives its predator away
- Lives in southwestern California and in areas between Costa Rica ans British Colombia
o Avoids forests and wetlands
o Live in a wide variety of temperatures
o Occasionally would live in a hollow tree
- Builds a den out of a hole in the ground and lines it with the leaves
- This animal looks like a cat
- Smallest type of skunk
- Their diet mainly consists of rats and other rodents
o Fall- Fruits and Berries
o Winter-Small Mammals
- They occupy most of their habitat pretty densely
Aardwolf
- Carnivores
- Long sticky tongue used to lick and eat termites
- Looks like a dog
§ Its big ears hear termites underground when hunting
§ Also help the aardwolf to lose body heat
- Long front legs and short hind legs
- Live in underground burrows
o Fynbos of South Africa
o Southern Egypt
- Very small and shy compared to the bigger and more aggressive relatives, hyenas
- Moves like a dog
- Reaches sexual maturity at 2 years old
o A mother can birth anywhere from one-six aardwolves at once
- Related to hyena family
